Instagram Reels vs Stories vs IGTV — What's the Difference?
Instagram has added so many video formats over the years that it's easy to lose track of what's what. Reels, Stories, and IGTV all let you share video, but they behave very differently — and that matters both for how you use Instagram and how you download content from it.
Reels: Short, Discoverable, Permanent
Reels are short vertical videos, usually 15 to 90 seconds long. They're designed to be discovered by people who don't follow you — Instagram actively pushes Reels into a dedicated Explore-style feed, which is why they're the format most likely to go viral.
Once posted, a Reel stays on the profile permanently (unless the creator deletes it). This makes Reels the easiest format to save or download later, since the content isn't going anywhere on its own.
Typical use case: entertainment clips, tutorials, trends, comedy skits, product demos.
Stories: Short-Lived, Casual, 24-Hour Lifespan
Stories are also vertical, but they disappear after 24 hours unless the creator saves them to a permanent "Highlight" on their profile. Stories tend to be more casual and unpolished than Reels — behind-the-scenes moments, quick updates, polls, and day-to-day content.
Because Stories vanish after a day, they're the format people most often want to download quickly, before the content disappears for good. If you want to save a Story, you generally need to do it within that 24-hour window unless it's been added to a Highlight.
Typical use case: daily updates, polls, quick announcements, temporary promotions.
IGTV: Long-Form Video (Mostly Retired)
IGTV was Instagram's answer to YouTube — a dedicated space for longer videos, from a few minutes up to an hour. Instagram has since folded most IGTV functionality into regular video posts on profiles, so you'll see fewer creators actively using the separate "IGTV" branding today. Older IGTV videos, however, are still accessible on many profiles as long-form posts.
Typical use case: tutorials, vlogs, interviews, or any content too long to fit in a Reel.
Quick Comparison
| Format | Length | Lifespan | Discoverability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reels | 15–90 sec | Permanent | High — pushed to non-followers |
| Stories | Up to 60 sec per slide | 24 hours (unless saved) | Low — followers only |
| IGTV | Minutes to 1 hour | Permanent | Low — profile-only |
How This Affects Downloading
Because Reels are permanent and public, they're generally the easiest and most reliable content to download at any time. Stories require more urgency since they expire — if you want to save one, don't wait. IGTV content, being long-form, downloads the same way as Reels, but expect larger file sizes given the longer runtime.
All three formats can be saved through our downloader as long as the content is from a public account. Just paste the link, pick the format tab that matches, and download in your preferred quality.

A note on respectful use: these formats exist because creators put real time into making them. If you download and reshare someone's Reel, Story, or IGTV video, credit them and, where possible, ask first — especially for anything beyond personal, private viewing.
