Instagram Terms Explained — A Simple Glossary
Instagram has accumulated a lot of feature-specific jargon over the years. If you've ever felt lost hearing terms like "carousel" or "archive" and wondering exactly what they mean, here's a straightforward glossary.
Reel
A short vertical video, typically 15 to 90 seconds, designed to be discovered by people who don't follow you. Reels appear in a dedicated feed and are the format most likely to reach a wide audience beyond your existing followers.
Story
A photo or short video that disappears after 24 hours unless saved to a Highlight. Stories are viewed in a full-screen, tap-through format and are generally more casual than permanent posts.
Highlight
A curated collection of Stories that a user has chosen to keep visible on their profile permanently, past the normal 24-hour expiration. Highlights appear as circular icons just below a profile's bio.
Carousel
A single post containing multiple photos or videos that viewers swipe through, indicated by small dots beneath the image. Each carousel can hold up to 10 items.
IGTV
Instagram's now-largely-retired branding for long-form video (originally up to an hour). Most of this functionality has been absorbed into standard video posts on profiles.
Archive
A private storage area for posts you've removed from your public profile grid without permanently deleting them. Archived posts can be restored to your profile at any time and remain visible only to you while archived.
Close Friends
A private list you can create to share Stories with a smaller, hand-picked group rather than all your followers. Content shared to Close Friends only appears to people on that specific list.
Grid
The main visual layout of a profile — the arrangement of a user's posted photos and videos in a scrollable, tiled view.
Explore
Instagram's discovery feed, personalized based on your activity, that surfaces content (especially Reels) from accounts you don't yet follow.
Direct Message (DM)
Instagram's private messaging feature, allowing one-on-one or group conversations separate from public comments.
Verified Badge
The blue checkmark indicating Instagram has confirmed an account belongs to the notable public figure, brand, or entity it claims to represent.
Shadowban
An informal (non-official) term used by creators to describe a suspected, unconfirmed reduction in a post's reach or discoverability, often blamed on unclear algorithm or policy triggers. Instagram doesn't officially use or confirm this term.
Algorithm
The overall system Instagram uses to decide what content to show each user, based on signals like past engagement, follows, and content type — not a single fixed rule but a constantly adjusted set of ranking factors.
