How to Download Just the Cover Photo of an Instagram Reel
Sometimes you don't need the whole video — just the cover image a Reel displays before it plays, whether for a reference image, a mood board, or simply because that single frame is the part you actually wanted.
What the Cover Photo Actually Is
Every Reel has a cover image — either an automatically selected frame from the video itself, or a custom image the creator chose specifically to represent the Reel in feeds and on their profile grid. This is the still image you see before tapping to play.
How to Save Just the Cover Image
1. Copy the link to the Reel, the same way you would for a full download
2. Paste it into the downloader
3. Look for the "Thumbnail Image" or cover-photo option in the results — alongside the video quality options, there's typically a separate image-only download choice
4. Download that option specifically, instead of one of the video formats
This gets you just the static cover image as a JPG, without downloading or processing the full video file — faster, and a smaller file if all you need is the image.
Why You Might Want Just the Cover
Mood boards and inspiration collections — sometimes the cover frame alone captures exactly the aesthetic or composition you wanted to reference, without needing the full video.
Faster loading for previews — if you're organizing a list of Reels you want to remember, saving just the lightweight cover images is much faster and takes up far less storage than downloading every full video.
The cover doesn't match the content you expected — occasionally a creator's chosen cover image differs meaningfully from the video itself (a custom cover unrelated to a specific frame); if the cover image itself is what interested you, downloading just that avoids grabbing an entire video you don't need.
A Note on Cover Image Quality
The cover image is generally high resolution — often matching or close to the resolution of the video itself, since Instagram wants the preview to look sharp in feeds and profile grids. You're not sacrificing much quality by choosing the image-only option over the full video.
Difference Between Cover Photo and Video Thumbnail Formats
For video posts, the "cover" and "thumbnail" are effectively the same thing — the static preview image.
